In 1985, only 18 books for children and young adults (out of approximately 2,500 published) were written or illustrated by African-Americans. Over the past few decades, that number has increased to include more diverse titles and relatable experiences for readers. Erin Piedmont and her students will share titles that paved the way for diversity, which have allowed children to identify with characters who look and feel the way they do.
